Recurrent abortions

Recurrent abortions, also known as recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), is defined as the occurrence of three or more consecutive miscarriages before 20 weeks of gestation. Gynecologists provide specialized services to investigate the underlying causes, offer treatment options, and support couples who experience recurrent abortions.

Purpose of Recurrent Abortions Service

  • To investigate the causes of recurrent pregnancy loss and provide appropriate treatment.
  • To support couples emotionally and medically through the process of achieving a successful pregnancy.

Components:

1. Comprehensive Evaluation:

  • Medical History: Detailed review of the patient's and partner's medical history, previous pregnancies, miscarriages, and any existing health conditions.
  • Genetic Counseling: Assessing the possibility of genetic factors contributing to recurrent miscarriages, including chromosomal abnormalities or inherited genetic disorders.
  • Thorough Examination: Performing physical exams and pelvic ultrasound to evaluate reproductive organs and identify any anatomical abnormalities or conditions that may impact pregnancy.

2. Laboratory Tests:

  • Blood Tests: Checking hormone levels (e.g., progesterone, thyroid hormones), blood clotting disorders (e.g., antiphospholipid syndrome), autoimmune disorders, and genetic markers.
  • Genetic Testing: Conducting karyotype analysis (chromosomal testing) of both partners to assess for chromosomal abnormalities or genetic disorders that could lead to miscarriages.

3. Follow-Up and Monitoring:

  • Continued Care: Monitoring pregnancies closely through early ultrasound scans and blood tests to detect early signs of viability and address any emerging issues promptly.
  • Preventive Measures: Educating on lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and managing stress, to promote overall reproductive health.
