Purpose of Menstrual Hygiene and Counseling
- To educate and support women and adolescents in managing menstrual hygiene effectively.
- To provide counseling on menstrual health and address any concerns related to menstruation.
Components:
1. Education on Menstrual Hygiene:
- Understanding Menstruation: Educating patients about the menstrual cycle, what is normal, and what to expect.
- Hygiene Products: Information on different menstrual hygiene products such as sanitary pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and reusable cloth pads. Guidance on how to use them properly.
- Personal Hygiene Practices: Teaching proper hygiene practices during menstruation, including the importance of regular washing and changing of menstrual products to prevent infections.
2. Counseling on Menstrual Health:
- Menstrual Irregularities: Providing information and support for dealing with irregular periods, heavy bleeding (menorrhagia), and missed periods (amenorrhea).
- Pain Management: Offering advice on managing menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea) through medication, lifestyle changes, and other therapies such as heat application and exercise.
- Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS): Educating on symptoms of PMS and providing strategies to manage mood swings, bloating, and other related symptoms.
- Menstrual Disorders: Diagnosing and treating menstrual disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, and fibroids.
3. Health Monitoring and Support:
- Routine Check-Ups: Regular gynecological exams to monitor menstrual health and identify any issues early.
- Nutritional Guidance: Advising on a balanced diet to support overall health and alleviate menstrual symptoms. This includes recommendations on foods rich in iron to prevent anemia in cases of heavy menstrual bleeding.
